Twelve months ago I was in stressful job that had a fancy title and a small pay packet, I knew I wanted more out of life so I decided to “Bite The Bullet” and do something about it.
I have always had an interest in computers since purchasing my first 486 with a 33 Hz processor and a massive 20mb hard drive. Most of the programs in those days were DOS programs; with hind sight this was a good thing.
So remembering my love of all things technical I decided to take a home based computer course that I could do in the evenings and weekends, around my day time job. I started to check out the courses and by chance came across Skills Train.
I started my course about a year ago and although I had successfully completed a mechanical apprenticeship years ago at a technical college, I did at first find starting to study again hard at first.
However I have persisted and I am still working my way through my course, despite often being tired after work, the kids wanting attention and all the other distractions we all have.
As a direct result of starting this Skills Train course I was able to secure a new job four months ago at a charity, this charity to my delight had one broken computer after another and I.T. issues that would give MI5 a headache!
So I promptly got to work and started upgrading memory swapping failed hard drives and sorting out network configuration issues. I only had the confidence to tackle these problems because of my Skills Train course.
Three weeks ago after receiving a grant from the lottery we had a brand new Windows 2003 server installed along with a terminal server and 30 new computers. I volunteered to work the weekend of the installation to gain even more experience.
My boss has just informed that he would like me to take control of the I.T. department and become the administrator for the system and server, he also gave me a nice pay rise to go along with my new responsibility.
This would have been a dream twelve months ago but my success story proves that with self determination to change your life, the will power to succeed and the correct training from a reputable college anything is possible.
Thank you Skills Train,
Andy

I was never really anygood at school but my thirst for technology was high, when I was at school the nearest thing to a computer we had was an old BBC computer which we had to share between 30 pupils, I left school and went to college to learn electronic engineering which I passed :). as the years went buy and the jobs came and went I thought it would be a good idea to do somthing that I enjoyed, this was computers, I had looked at doing the MCSA, MCSE courses but found that it was to expencive from many trining providers and gave up on the idea. One day I came across the local newspaper and saw the advert for Skills Train and thought that it May be a good idea to get some infomation on the cost of courses now, it was still expensive but after being offered a student loan I was in.
I am now studying to become a Cisco Engineer (CCNA) and if it wasn't for Skills Train I would still be selling beds for a living. So if your reading this and thinking that it is hard work and yo!
u cant cope, phone the tutor team and they WILL always be happy to help. I am so glad I decided to respond to the advert in the paper and I look forward to getting a job that I WANT to do rather than a job I have to do.

I did this course to show to other people that I do know some things about computers and how they work, because people like my parents dont believe I can do this. If you have flair for computers it is fairly easy, if you dont then it can be really hard. If I can do it then so can most other people. I would be very interested in knowing how many other women are doing the A+ N+ and CISCO course. I am looking forward to doing the rest of my course, which is the N+

Before I started my course, I was already a student of the Open University. I had to combine my work with my Open University Undergraduate degree program and the A+,N+,CCNA and CCNP programs. Now, I have completed the A+ and I have already started the N+. I know it is not easy to do what I just did, but I told myself that a lot of people must have done more than what I am currently doing. That gave me courage. The A+ program has helped me a lot. I am now more confident to deal with hardware problems. Achieving this success has even spurred me on to go for more. Skill Train College programs has made my ICT degree program at Open University a whole lot easier.

If you want to improve your concentration and efficiency as a student, develop a place to study that is just that - a place where you go to work on academics. The Library is full of good spots to study. Experiment with what works best for you.

Well, I fell that I have maintained a high average throughout the A+ part of the course. I have had a few different circumstances in which doing the work has been difficult such as, I am currently working at the same time at Capgemini, a IT Support Company, I do there 7am to 4pm, which is really time consuming becuase I am tired all the time, the only time I get to work is Saturday and Sunday. Apart from this, there was a situation where my mom and dad had to leave over the christmas period to go India. I was left home with my younger brother and sister. My parents left me with the responsibility to pay bills, look after everyone else, do shopping etc. Most these things were extremely hard because I was on a strict budget and taking into account that I do not drive. I feel that sharing the responsibilty between my brother and sister was a good idea, becuase then it relieves pressure from myself.

After sustaining a fracture dislocation of the knee, ligamant damage and osteoarthritis whilst serving in the Army many years ago, my health dictated that I must change career direction. Having never studied beyond secondary education level, I decided that due to my interests in all things IT that a career based on my hobby was the way forward. 18 months ago I embarked on the A+, N+, CCNA and CCNP course. Over the past 18 months I've had two additional knee ops and am currently waiting on a third. In the past 18 months I've submitted course work every week, with only one exception. The fact that I have this course to focus on has given me hope that the future is bright. I'm really looking forward to finishing the course and achieving a qualification that is recognised world wide. I'm really proud of myself and my regimented course of study, you're never too old to start something new.

I am an electrician by trade so work really long hours and managing to fit study and family pressures into my very busy day is hard work, but I do. when I first started this course I thought there was no way I would be able to understand the work. my kids have been great, but my wife has been so supportive that it drives me on to study in my spare time and to study the work. I have realised that I love learning new skills and how to sort my self out in finding time to study. what amazes me is that I can remember what I have studied when I sit and do the tma`s. I have repaired 3 computers in the last 3 weeks and am finding it easier each time to understand simple faults on p.c`s. when I started this course I didnt know much about i.t, I knew a bit but not as much as I do now. I can honestly say I really am enjoying the course I have enrolled on. thanks

My main achievements this month has to be my tutor marked assessments!!I have gained higher marks almost everytime!!!I am very happy with myself for doing so.
Another main achievement I have made this month thanks to the team members of this college, is I have been able to do private work involving my I.T skills that I have obtained due to the team members support, and the skills in which I have learnt through my course. The private work I have done is for people I know and people who have passed me on as a good name. This I am very happy about to, as it gives me experience and confidence in working in an I.T environment!!
