Top tips for getting an IT job

Anyone with IT qualifications, such as having completed a PC engineer course, can improve their chance of securing a job by following a recruiter's recommendations, reports suggest.

Speaking to technology magazine Computer Weekly, Indian IT supplier Infosys offered its top tips for helping applicants stand out from the crowd.

Infosys' first piece of advice is to get some interview practice, as candidates should "treat every meeting with a potential employer as an interview and practise mock psychometric tests on the web before you do the real thing".

Proving they are flexible and adaptable is also vital for candidates, said the firm, as technology is changing rapidly and employees must be able to grasp new programmes and software quickly.

In addition, soft skills such as communication are just as important in IT as any sector, notes Infosys.

CVs can be boosted by including real-life experiences such as volunteering and travelling, it added.

For those recently made redundant, further guidance came from online recruiter Jobsite.co.uk.

The site said most firms will still interview a good candidate regardless of whether they had been made redundant.
