Robot technology could have dangerous consequences

Computer scientists are discussing whether research into robots should be limited in order to safeguard against social disruption.

The New York Times reports that some scientists believe that improved technology could threaten human jobs.

People could also be forced to live alongside machines that increasingly resemble humans, it added.

The scientists met at the Asilomar Conference Grounds on Monterey Bay in California and will release their full findings later this year.

According to the paper, the scientists focused on how technology that mimics human behaviour, such as voice synthesis, could be used for criminal purposes.

The conference was organised by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.

Aiming to advance understanding of "intelligent behaviour" in machines, the association also hopes to improve public understanding of artificial intelligence.

Founded in 1979, the association organises meetings and workshops as well as publishing reports and magazines discussing its members' new findings.
