Skills training essential in downturn

It is vital employers invest in skills training in the current economic climate, it has been claimed.

In news which may be of interest to those considering IT training courses, Paul Holme, regional skills director for the Learning and Skills Council, commented that employers need to utilise the abilities of their staff in the downturn.

He added: "It is vital that employers continue to invest in skills - businesses that do invest often emerge stronger and more competitive than they were before the recession."

Mr Holme went on to say if companies undertake a skills audit, it would give them a better knowledge of their existing work base and enable them to focus their resources more effectively.

In March this year, the Work Foundation claimed that 40 per cent of employees have more skills than their jobs require.

Research by the group also indicated that 20 per cent of graduates are in 'low knowledge content' jobs.
