IT project managers should not cut budgets in reaction to downturn

IT project manager course graduates should not look to cut budgets during the slowdown as they will be reducing future opportunities, an expert warns.

Justin Speake, chief executive at Bloor Research, tells Computer Weekly that while it is important for companies to analyse their existing expenditure, hasty decisions should not be made based on this.

He says that firms should not cut spending as a knee-jerk reaction, which could interest IT project manager course graduates.

Mr Speake states: "They should reaffirm that their return on investment process is effective. If they confirm it was right, they should not cancel a project."

Harvard Management has published a list of mistakes that companies base their decisions to cut IT expenditure on, including delaying decisions, being overly-cautious and broadening its customer base, which could be highlighted as part of an IT project manager course.
