Government advocates skills investment

The government has stated that investment in training and skills is particularly important in a difficult economic climate, it may interest those considering IT training courses to hear.

Skills secretary John Denham commented that public services should invest more of the £175 billion a year which is spent procuring goods and services in promoting training opportunities.

John Cridland, deputy director-general of the Confederation of British Industry, commented: "Developing people's skills will help our economy to emerge from the recession in the best possible shape. It's right that the government continues to play its part by using public procurement to enhance the UK's skills base."

The statements come as the Office of Government Commerce publishes a guide for those responsible for letting publicly-funded contracts, advising how to improve skills training and apprenticeships.

Last week, employee skills regulator Cognisco claimed that if companies invest less in training schemes, such as IT distance learning courses, they are undermining their future productivity.
